AikiDojo of Hickory is a veteran-owned, family-run traditional dojo where Japanese Samurai culture meets modern life in the Catawba Valley. This is our story, and the philosophy every student inherits.
AikiDojo of Hickory exists for one reason: Kaicho Pete Nappier’s conviction that traditional martial arts training changes lives, and that Hickory deserved a dojo that took the tradition seriously.
Pete began training as a boy and never stopped. Five and a half decades later he holds the rank of 9th Dan in Aiki Budo, one of the highest grades in the art, and has spent most of those years teaching. Students who walked through the doors as nervous seven-year-olds have come back as adults to enroll their own children. That kind of continuity is rare in the martial arts world, and it’s the heart of what we do.
Today the dojo on Springs Road NE runs more than twenty classes a week for ages four through adult: Lil Samurai, Young Warriors, Teen Samurai, Adult Aikido, an Advanced Weapons class and a daytime Homeschool PE program. Assistant Kaicho Tony Robinson and a core of senior students help carry the teaching load, and the culture.
Aikido’s founder, Morihei Ueshiba, called his art Budo, the way of the warrior, and also called it the Art of Peace. Those two ideas are not in conflict. A student who can control an attacker without injuring them has more choices than one who can only punch harder.
At AikiDojo of Hickory we teach the older, more martial form of the art, Aiki Budo, which includes atemi (strikes to unbalance), joint locks, throws, pins and the Samurai weapons. Our students learn to be genuinely dangerous so that they can afford to be genuinely kind. Kaicho puts it simply: “Confidence, character and practical self-defense, without unnecessary violence.”
“We don’t train people to win fights. We train people so that fights stop happening to them.”
That philosophy is why anxious kids, neurodivergent kids, shy teens, busy professionals and retirees all find a home on the same mat. Nobody is here to prove they are tougher than the person next to them. Everybody is here to get better.
We bow in, we bow out, and we treat every training partner as someone who is helping us improve.
Blend before you resist. On the mat and off it, the calm person controls the situation.
Rank is earned in years, not weeks. Kids learn that hard things are worth finishing.
Courage is doing the technique when your heart is pounding. We build it one rep at a time.
Train honestly, fall honestly, tap honestly. There is no faking it in a real dojo.
Birthdays, promotions, tough weeks, this community shows up for each other.
The best way to understand AikiDojo of Hickory is to stand on the mat. Your first week is free, kids, teens and adults.
