Curriculum

What Your Preschooler Learns in Lil Samurai

1

Balance & Coordination

Animal walks, rolling, hopping and stance games build the body awareness every sport later depends on.

2

Listening & Following Directions

Bowing in, lining up, waiting your turn, the dojo makes structure fun, and it shows up at home and preschool.

3

Safe Falling

The first real Aikido skill: how to tumble and roll without getting hurt. Playground-proof.

4

Confidence & Courage

Every child gets called up to demonstrate. Shy kids find their voice one bow at a time.

5

Respect & Kindness

Partners, not opponents. Lil Samurai learn to help a friend up before they learn to take one down.

6

Stranger Awareness

Simple, age-appropriate lessons on personal space, using a big voice and getting to a safe adult.

Why It Works

Why Hickory Parents Start Their Kids at Four

Four to six is when children are wiring the habits that stick, how they handle frustration, whether they can wait, how they treat other kids. A structured, joyful 30 minutes on the mat twice a week does more for those habits than most parents expect. And because Aikido never asks a child to hit or be hit, it’s a martial art you can feel completely comfortable starting this early.

Lil Samurai is deliberately short. Thirty minutes is the attention span of a preschooler, and we would rather send them home wanting more than watching the clock. Around age seven, Lil Samurai graduate into Young Warriors, where the real technique begins.

FAQ

Lil Samurai Questions, Answered

Is my 4-year-old too young for martial arts?

Not for Lil Samurai. The class is built for four-, five- and six-year-olds: 30 minutes, game-based, and led by an instructor with decades of experience with small children. If your child can follow simple directions in a group, they are ready.

Do Lil Samurai learn to fight?

No. They learn to fall safely, move with balance, listen, take turns and use a big voice. Real technique begins in Young Warriors around age seven.

What should my child wear?

Comfortable clothes they can move in, a t-shirt and sweatpants are perfect. Bare feet on the mat. A gi comes later if you enroll.

Can I stay and watch?

Yes. Parents watch from the lobby, and for very young students that visibility helps.

How much does Lil Samurai cost?

Memberships are month-to-month with no long-term contract. Start with a free week, and we’ll share pricing in person before it ends.
