Curriculum

What You’ll Train in Adult Aikido

1

Effective Self-Defense

Techniques that neutralize grabs, strikes and tackles without relying on size or strength — the reason Aikido works for everyone.

2

Joint Locks & Pins

Ikkyo through yonkyo, nikyo, sankyo, kote gaeshi: precise control techniques that end a confrontation on your terms.

3

Throws & Ukemi

Irimi nage, shiho nage, kokyu nage — and the falling skills that let you train them safely for decades.

4

Weapons Principles

Bokken and jo work that sharpens timing and distance, leading to the Advanced Weapons Class for ranked students.

5

De-escalation

Kaicho’s specialty: reading a confrontation early and ending it verbally. The best technique is the one you never need.

6

Fitness Without Wreckage

A full-body workout — mobility, core, cardio — that leaves your knees, shoulders and back better than it found them.

Why It Works

Why Adults in Hickory Choose Aikido Over the Gym

A gym membership gives you a workout. A dojo gives you a workout, a skill that could save your life, a community, and a reason to show up that has nothing to do with vanity. Adult Aikido at our Hickory dojo brings together beginners, black belts, twenty-somethings and retirees on the same mat — because Aikido is one of the few martial arts that gets better with age.

With morning classes at 10 AM and evening classes at 7 PM, training fits around shift work, parenting and travel. Many of our adult students are parents who started because their kids did, and stayed because they found something they’d been missing. The Wednesday evening Adult Samurai class puts extra emphasis on the Aiki Budo curriculum — atemi, harder locks and weapons — for those who want the martial edge.

FAQ

Adult Aikido Questions, Answered

I’m a complete beginner. Is Adult Aikido for me?

Yes. Every adult class mixes beginners with ranked students. You’ll be paired with experienced partners who know how to help you learn safely.

I’m in my 50s/60s. Am I too old to start?

No. Aikido is practiced into the seventies and beyond because it relies on timing and technique. Tell Kaicho about any injuries and training will be adapted.

How physically demanding is it?

As demanding as you make it. A 90-minute evening class is a real workout, but nobody is pushed past their limit. You’ll be sore in a good way.

Is Aikido effective in a real fight?

Aiki Budo — the form we teach — was built for it: off-line movement, unbalancing strikes, joint destruction and throws onto hard surfaces, trained with control. Kaicho also teaches de-escalation so you rarely need any of it.

Do adults learn weapons?

Weapons principles are part of every adult class. Ranked students train bokken, jo and tanto in the Friday Advanced Weapons Class.

How long to black belt?

Typically four to six years of consistent training. Rank is earned by testing in front of Kaicho.

“It's the perfect program for children who are neurodivergent. Giving them confidence, learning a skill set to protect themselves, and teaching them they can do this!”
